Exploring Bled

Bled Castle
Perched on a steep cliff more than 100m above the lake, the castle is built on two levels, and dates back to the 11th century. The baroque southern wing houses a museum collection that traces the history of Lake Bled and its settlements from the Bronze Age to the mid-19th century.

Bled Island
The tiny, tear-shaped island, the only true island in Slovenia, has been the site
of a Christian church since the 9th century. The easiest way to the island is aboard
a hand-propelled pletna. Alternatively you can rent
a rowing boat at the Castle baths.

Vintar Gorge
Vintar Gorge is 4 km northwest of Bled, and it
has a wooden walkway that hugs the rock walls of the gorge for 1600m along the Radovna River, criss-crossing the raging torrent four times over rapids, waterfalls and pools before reaching the
13 m high Sum Waterfall. This is certainly worth a visit as it is only a short drive away from Bled.

Ljubjlana

Ljubjlana is Slovenia’s largest city. The name Ljubjlana means ‘beloved’ in Slovene and has been described as a little Prague without the crowds or a more intimate Budapest. Highlights in Ljubjlana are Ljubjana Castle, Kavarna Plocnik, National Gallery, Museum of Modern Art, Krizanke theatre and the Old Town at Metelkova. We would certainly recommend spending some time in the capital, as it is only a one hour drive from the chalet, and will featuring on the tourist map once word gets around....

What we recommend after several days walking is to go to Bled for the day and try out the slalom cars -which go down the Bled ski slope in summer- followed by a pletna ride across the lake to St Mary's Church. Finish the day with a slice of traditional Bled cream cake (Kremsnita) in the Panorama terrace next to the Hotel Toplice.
